Throughout history, women have often lived in the shadow of men and their actions, with little room for their freedom, rights, and agency. However, the experience of all these women was not uniform. The position and role of women have changed over time and space, and have also depended on which social group women belonged to. Therefore, in this thesis, I will present the everyday life of ancient women before Hellenism in Athens, Sparta, and Egypt, and compare them. This will be followed by a description of the status of Greek women in Egypt during the Hellenistic period, based on Theocritus’s work Idylls.
