Abstract

Title:Selected Terminology in the Specialized Language of Mining – German-Slovenian Comparison
Abstract:
The master's thesis examines terminology in the mining industry, focusing on the German and Slovenian languages. I emphasise the importance and uniqueness of terminology as it affects communication between professionals, work efficiency and successful knowledge transfer. In my master's thesis, I research the historical background of mining in Germany, Austria and Slovenia, with a particular emphasis on mining in Idrija. I highlight the interconnectedness of the areas and the strong cultural and technological influences, resulting from their shared historical background. The thesis reveals that, alongside the transfer of mining knowledge and related fields such as medicine, botany and administration, language also transferred between German-speaking and Slovenian-speaking areas. Consequently, terminological terms have developed in the Slovenian area that are closely related to German terms. These are often used as the basis for forming Slovenian terminology. The master's thesis contains a glossary of selected German and Slovenian mining terms, based on which I studied their morphological and syntactic structures, determined their translation strategies and found that calquing is the most frequent translation strategy. This further confirms the strong connection between German and Slovenian.
