Abstract

Title:Performativity of the prosthetic body / Prosthetics
Abstract:
The master thesis entitled Performativity of the Prosthetic Body deals with a series of works entitled Prosthetics, based on the use of one's own body as a base or tool for artistic expression. The works in the series share common characteristics such as body objects, video performances and installation presentations. Among other things, through these elements I explore the relationship between the body, technology, and space. The bodily objects are made of different combinations of materials that underpin the purpose of the work and coincide with the idea of usability. The works in the series show the gradual development of the idea of the MA thesis over a longer period. In the first part of the series, Seeking Prevention, 2024; I explore the complexity of touch, presence in absence, Duchamp's infrathin and Lacan's objet a. In the field of art, “absence” refers to elements that are not physically present but are implied or suggested. The concept of presence, especially in the context of touch, revolves around the absence of touch as an objet a. In Lacanian psychoanalysis, the objet a symbolises the unattainable object of desire, which stimulates a constant longing and pursuit within the void in the symbolic order. Duchamp coined the term infrathin to describe the subtle, often imperceptible nuances or moments that exist between objects or experiences. The subject matter of the second work Brace Yourself, 2024; focuses on pain and bodily immobility as consequences of dance trauma, and emancipation from invasive control over the body. Through the use of bodily objects, I express a utopian longing to reuse one's own body as a flawless tool on the one hand, and the need to be liberated from desire on the other. The third work in the Prosthetics series, entitled Blurring Haze, 2025, shows the blurring of one's vision as a display of self-blinding, and the desire to ignore.
