Abstract

Title:Dendrochronological research of the roof structure of Škofja Loka Castle
Abstract:
The research focuses on the dendrochronological analysis of wooden structural elements of the Skofja Loka Castle, one of the most important cultural and historical monuments in Slovenia. The aim of the thesis was to determine, through dendrochronological dating, the felling time of wood of selected roof elements and to establish the extent to which they correspond with archival records on documented historical renovations. As part of the research, samples were taken from the castle’s roof structure, prepared for analysis, the ring widths were measured, and tree-ring chronologies were constructed for dating. Established methods and software tools, such as CooRecorder, CDendro, and TSAP-Win, were used to capture, compare, and statistically process the data. In total, 40 cores were extracted from constructions in four sectors. The results revealed that many of the samples correspond to building activities and renovations at the end of the 17th century, during Baroque renovations in the 18th and at the end of the 19th century, thereby confirming their historical significance. The thesis thus contributes to a better understanding of the building activities in the castle and highlights the importance of dendrochronology as an important method in cultural heritage research. In addition to its scientific contribution, the analysis also holds practical relevance for the preservation and conservation of architectural heritage.
