The diploma thesis deals with the conservation treatment of a wooden polychromed Putto, a piece from the collection of the Regional Museum Maribor, with emphasis on the evaluation of different methods and materials for the removal of colophony (rosin) varnish from the paint layer.
Our investigation into rosin, its properties and solubility, as well as the diverse materials and methods for varnish removal, was conducted with scientific rigour. We began by photographically documenting the statue, inventorying the damage, and taking and analysing three samples. These samples provided us with crucial insights into the properties of the paint layers and coating. The conservation treatment commenced with the consolidation of the paint layer and surface cleaning, followed by the varnish removal process. We rigorously researched and tested various varnish removal systems, both traditional and newer, and evaluated them empirically. Throughout the varnish removal process, we closely monitored the effect of the materials on the surface and made adjustments as necessary.
The consolidation, surface cleaning, testing of the materials and varnish removal were quite demanding and time-consuming; therefore, the conservation-restoration treatment was not fully completed.
