In my thesis I explore the issue of seating in a children’s theatre. The design process begins with a research and analysis phase, which includes an overview of the history of theatre seating, components of a theatre seat, material analysis, safety regulations and the ergonomics of seating, focused on children’s seating. It also includes a market overview and an examination of group seating practices in Slovenia and around the world. Following the user analysis, which I conducted through a survey of theatre visitors, I wrote up a synthesis of findings, design goals and key guidelines that the project aims to achieve.
I identified the design problem of unsuitable or outdated seats in a children’s theatre during my student work at the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, where an accident occurred while the seat was being used. I condusted a detailed analys of the existing seat, identified the problems and addressed them systematically.
The result of the thesis is a redesigned and modernised theatre seat for the Grand stage of the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, intended for group seating of children and their accompanying adults.
