The thesis deals with the use of batteries as part of ship propulsion. The first part briefly describes the history of batteries on ships and the use of these systems on modern ships. This is followed by an explanation of the design, operation of the battery, its subsystems, and the configuration of battery systems on ships. Fuel cell technology is also briefly described as it is very similar to a battery in terms of its operating principle. I also included a chapter on regulations and safety of battery systems in the thesis, as this is one of the weak points of these systems. The second part of the thesis is devoted to emissions, one of the most important reasons for using this type of propulsion. I concluded the thesis with an analysis of actual cases of battery use on ships.
