Abstract

Title:The origin and productivity of Cameroon sheep : B. Sc. thesis
Abstract:
The thesis deals with the origin and productivity of Cameroon sheep, which originate from West Africa and are becoming increasingly widespread in Slovenia. The aim of the thesis is to present the history of the breed, its morphological and productive characteristics, and to analyse the experiences and practices of Slovenian breeders with these sheep. The theoretical part presents the origin and characteristics of the breed, as well as its biological and productive parameters. In the practical part of the thesis, a survey was conducted among breeders of Cameroon sheep in Slovenia, who have more than 10 adult animals on their farms. From the responses, we found the reasons for keeping, the rearing technology, and the difficulties and advantages of these sheep. The results of the survey showed that breeders choose this breed because of its undemanding nature, resistance on diseases, and good fertility. Most breeders raise this breed for the meat for self-sufficiency, but also for sale animals to hobby breeders. Based on the collected results, we could conclude that the Cameroon sheep has a potential for the development in Slovenia, especially for smaller, extensive farms. Its production characteristics enable successful production even in less favourable conditions, such as steep and hard-to-access terrain, harsh climate, and lower-quality feed, making it an interesting alternative breed for the specific (niche) products in the future.
