Abstract
Naloga s tem prispeva k širši razpravi o vlogi socialnega dela kot zaveznika marginaliziranih skupin in o možnosti reforme znotraj verskih institucij.

Title:Uncovering Hidden Influences: Church Aid Programs and Their View on the LBGTQIA+ Community : magistrsko delo
Abstract:
This master's thesis explores the Catholic Church's stance on homosexuality and examines the role of social work in the protection of LGBTQIA+ individuals, with a particular focus on conversion therapy as an approach or method aimed at altering sexual orientation. The primary aim of the research was to investigate how students from the Faculty of Social Work and the Faculty of Theology perceive conversion therapy and what attitudes they hold toward homosexuality, especially in the context of faith, professional ethics, and human rights. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Two separate questionnaires (one for each faculty) were distributed, and two semi-structured interviews were conducted with church officials. The data collected offer insights into the complexity of how this topic is understood among the sample population. Quantitative analysis revealed differences between the two groups, particularly in their attitudes toward conversion therapy and their framing of homosexuality as a moral issue. Qualitative responses from social work students emphasized the importance of advocacy, anti-discrimination efforts, and the creation of safe spaces or supportive communities for LGBTQIA+ individuals. In contrast, theology students—as well as the interviewed clergy—were more likely to express alignment with official Church teachings. The findings confirm that attitudes toward both conversion therapy and homosexuality are strongly influenced by ideological and institutional frameworks. The study highlights the need for ethical guidelines that prevent harmful practices while fostering dialogue between religious communities, professional disciplines, and often-excluded social groups. This thesis contributes to the broader discourse on the role of social work as an ally to marginalized populations and the potential for inclusive reform within faith-based institutions.
