Western European populist radical rights parties in the European Union context: the case of Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) : master's thesis

With a view to contribute to understanding of the highly consequential political and ideological impact of the populist radical right parties on the European and broader political map, the research explores and elaborates on the ideological, strategic, rhetorical and discursive characteristics of these parties in the Western Europe in the European Union (EU) context. It provides a perspective on how these parties utilize migration, climate change, the war in Ukraine, inflation and liberal norms of the EU to advance their party popularity and affect the EU politics in line with their politico-ideological strategies. To that aim, the research resorts to the case study of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), as one of the most long-standing populist radical right parties in the Western Europe. By employing the discourse analysis, the Thesis delves into the data of the election campaign period pertaining to the 2024 and European elections, as the most recent election cycles on which the FPÖ achieved the historical electoral successes. It also discloses the footprint of the FPÖ’s populist discourse in the party’s EU politics and foreign policy agenda, particularly in the context of the right-wing sovereignism.

• Title: Zahodnoevropske populistične radikalne desne stranke v kontekstu Evropske unije: primer Avstrijske svobodnjaške stranke (FPÖ) : magistrsko delo

Abstract

Z namenom prispevanja k razumevanju politično in ideološko izredno vplivnega položaja populističnih radikalno desnih strank na evropskem in širšem političnem zemljevidu, raziskava preučuje in osvetljuje njihove ideološke, strateške, retorične in diskurzivne značilnosti v Zahodni Evropi v okviru Evropske unije (EU). Raziskava ponuja vpogled v načine kako te stranke instrumentalizirajo migracije, podnebne spremembe, vojno v Ukrajini, inflacijo ter liberalne norme EU za povečanje svoje priljubljenosti ter za vplivanje na evropsko politiko v skladu s svojimi politično­ideološkimi strategijami. V ta namen raziskava uporabi študijo primera Svobodnjaške stranke Avstrije (FPÖ), ene izmed najdlje delujočih populističnih skrajno desnih strank v Zahodni Evropi. Z uporabo diskurzivne analize se naloga poglobi v podatke iz volilne kampanje leta 2024 ter v okviru evropskih volitev, kot najnovejšega volilnega cikla, v katerem je FPÖ dosegla zgodovinski volilni uspeh. Raziskava prav tako razkriva sledi populističnega diskurza FPÖ v evropski politiki in zunanji politični agendi stranke, zlasti v kontekstu desničarskega suverenizma.
