The aim of this work was to create illustrations for the children's fairy tale Mesto Žužu by Mojca Andrej. We explored the process of designing and illustrating a children's fairy tale with the aim of finding the most visually appealing and readable solution for young readers.
Before we started sketching, we explored different types and techniques of illustration and how illustrations relate to children's perception and imagination. We also investigated the effects of the chosen typography on children and analyzed which fonts are more suitable for reading. As children are often novice readers, it is important to choose a font that ensures the best readability.
In the experimental part, we first analyzed the entire fairy tale and briefly summarized the events of the individual stories. We introduced the setting, the timeline and the main characters. We also examined the target audience and, based on our findings, determined the appropriate typography and the approach and execution of the illustrations.
In our thesis, we examined the illustration of a fairy tale to create a visually appealing and functional children's book. We focused on the placement of the illustrations, the choice of typography and the book format to achieve a harmonious balance between text and images and enhance the reading experience. The design process allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of how to integrate artistic and design elements into an effective visual narrative.
