Abstract

Title:Graphic Design of Postage Stamp
Abstract:
In this work we have analysed the comprehensive process of designing a stamp, focusing on the historical, technical and artistic aspects. In the theoretical part, we presented the history of stamps in Slovenia, with a special focus on early creators such as Miroslav Oražem and Ivan Vaupotič, as well as on the world's first stamp, known as the „Penny Black“, designed by Sir Rowland Hill. In addition to the historical overview, various printing techniques, the materials used in stamp production, common printing errors, the significance of colours and their application were discussed. Special attention was paid to analysing past artistic works, taking into account the complexity of visual and typographic design in accordance with the guidelines of Pošta Slovenije. We also reviewed the design guidelines for 2025 and selected the theme Slovenia in Superlatives – Arboretum Volčji Potok from the announced themes, focussing artistically and thematically on the field of botany. In the creative part, we focussed on visual design, technical methods and the challenges of the creative process. We chose three spring flowers as motifs: the tulip, the daffodil and the snowflake. Our work began with sketches, the transfer of designs to linoleum, linocut, digitisation, photo editing in Adobe Photoshop and final adjustments in Adobe Illustrator. The result of this work is a series of three stamps that adhere to the client's technical specifications. Throughout the design process, we also paid tribute to Slovenia's natural heritage. The work emphasises the importance of stamps as cultural carriers and their role in promoting the natural and cultural heritage of the issuing country.
