Abstract

Title:Proposal for conservation-restoration interventions on the wooden totem statue of Peter Jovanović in front of the forestry school in Ukanc and laboratory experiments on consolidation of wood
Abstract:
The master’s thesis discusses a wooden totemic sculpture created by Peter Jovanovič in 1975. The sculpture, located in front of the forestry school in Ukanc, was carved from a single large piece of wood. Prolonged exposure to outdoor conditions has led to significant deterioration, which resulted in fungal decay, reduced strength and hardness of the wood, and a risk of collapse. The study explores the factors contributing to the degradation of wooden sculptures in outdoor environments and investigates appropriate conservation methods. The development of a conservation-restoration plan was based on information gathered from available literature, interview with the artist, on-site visual assessment and conducted analyses. The research relies on literature addressing the conservation of outdoor wooden sculptures, with a particular emphasis on mounting the sculpture. The practical part of the thesis focuses on testing melamine resin as a consolidant for dry wood. Typically used for waterlogged wood, this resin was used in various concentrations and applied using different techniques (brushing and immersion). The testing was conducted on oak wood samples, which are similar in species and approximate condition to the original sculpture material. We also examined other commonly used consolidants for dry wood. The analysis included dimensional changes, the penetration of the consolidants, color alterations and the impact on the compressive strength of treated samples.
