Abstract
The topic of the doctoral dissertation is the approaches and methods of architectural conservation of Roman monuments in the city of Pula in the 19th and 20th centuries. The starting point of the research is that the ancient monuments in Pula, through their architectural interventions, were crucial for the formation of the modern city, and that their role is inseparable from the modernisation processes that were taking place in Europe at that time. Since the Roman ruins had already gained the status of historic monuments managed by the public administration in the early 19th century, their unquestionable status as public goods became the starting point for the expansion of the public domain throughout modern society. Architecture, as a specific public art, was the technique of this expansion, firstly through the architectural conservation of the monument itself, secondly through the architectural design of the public space around the monument, and thirdly as urban planning within which the influence of the ancient heritage spread throughout the entire spatial structure of the public sphere. Although these three processes - conservation, landscape design and urban planning - have often been disciplinarily separated throughout history, the thesis of this research is that these three activities are inseparable, and that the importance of architecture as a formal articulation of the public holds them together.

Title:Pristopi in metode ohranjanja rimskih spomenikov v Pulju znotraj procesa urbane modernizacije 19. in 20. stoletja
Abstract:
Tema doktorske disertacije so pristopi in metode konserviranja rimskih spomenikov v Pulju v 19. in 20. stoletju.
