The thesis titled The Impact of Factory Activities on the Environment and the Logistic Aspect of Storage and Transport explores the interconnection between production processes, logistical solutions, and environmental impacts in the company GKN Driveline Slovenia, d. o. o., which is part of the international GKN Automotive group. The core focus of the thesis lies in internal logistics, the handling of hazardous substances, and the company’s sustainable operations.
The theoretical part presents key logistics concepts, such as warehousing, internal transport, hazardous materials management, waste handling, and ESG/ESRS standards. These provide the foundation for the practical analysis, which focuses on the organization of storage and material flows in the company GKN Driveline Slovenia.
The empirical part offers a detailed analysis of the warehouse system, emphasizing the importance of standardized transport units, strategically placed lubrication and ecological islands, and a central grease dosing system (DOSSIS). The company is actively pursuing the electrification of its transport fleet, reducing forklift use in production, and increasing employee safety. The introduction of electric tugger trains and the “forklift-free zone” concept represent a modern approach to internal logistics optimization.
The thesis also examines procedures for the safe and controlled handling of hazardous substances. The company maintains precise records of chemical usage and strives to implement a system in which hazardous material stocks are stored at suppliers and delivered on demand. This approach reduces safety risks and improves spatial efficiency.
Waste management is addressed through ecological islands and a central covered depot, from which authorized contractors collect waste. This ensures traceability, compliance with environmental regulations, and overall organizational clarity.
Special attention is given to safety measures, employee training, and organizational culture development. The company uses an advanced Personal Safety Guard system that warns employees of approaching vehicles with acoustic and vibration signals, automatically reducing forklift speed. Mandatory training every two years enhances awareness and reinforces responsible behaviour in the workplace.
The research concludes that GKN Driveline Slovenia, d. o. o., is actively implementing sustainable measures based on ESG and ESRS principles. The company demonstrates best practices in logistics, safety, and environmental protection. Its focus on digitalization, electrification, and systematic hazardous substance management positions it as a forward-looking organization committed to sustainable industrial logistics and production.
