This thesis explores how color and its compositions, as well as the placement and shapes of light in video games, influence the player's attention and the creation of atmosphere within virtual spaces. These visual elements serve as key tools for conveying information to the player and guiding their emotional response without the need for explicit textual instructions.
The theoretical part of the thesis analyzes fundamental types of color compositions and lighting techniques, and their roles in shaping the game environment. The second part offers a comparative study of the games Journey and Still Wakes the Deep, which, through entirely different approaches to color and lighting, create unique gameplay experiences, that are characteristic of their respective genres. The analysis demonstrates that both games effectively use visual elements to guide the player and establish the intended emotional tone.
As part of the thesis, a prototype was also developed to test the player’s emotional perception of space and behavior within the game. The results show that the visual arrangement of lighting and the choice of color contribute to intuitive navigation and the emotional impact of the game on the player.
This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the importance of visual communication in games and offers a foundation for further research in the fields of design, user experience, and perceptual psychology in video games.
