Abstract

Title:Chemical analysis of silk samples
Abstract:
Silk is made of natural silk fibers. During the silk production process, various processes are used, such as silk weighting, dyeing, and bleaching. These processes improve its properties. Silk is made of natural fibers that are subject to degradation. The basic structural unit of silk fibers is fibroin. Aging of silk causes a change in the chemical composition of fibroin, which affects the properties and appearance of silk. The condition of silk can also be worsened by various contaminations, chemical treatments, and processes used during production. I analyzed a collection of 105 silk samples. The samples were not labeled, so I first named them appropriately and photographed them. I prepared the samples for pH measurement. This was followed by XRF analysis, where sample preparation was not required. I determined the pH range of the collection. Using the data obtained with XRF analysis, I presented the chemical composition of the samples using graphs. The results showed that most of the samples were treated with the weighting process.
