The basis of the master’s thesis Illustration as Light Urban Intervention is the exploration of drawing and illustration as artistic interventions in the urban environment and their influence on public space. The project was carried out as part of the annual Lighting Guerrilla festival in Ljubljana, under the overarching theme “Disturbances.”
The theoretical part presents drawing as the basis for illustration, followed by the placement, use and role of illustration in space, with an emphasis on murals and their role in transforming and revitalizing the urban environment. This is followed by several key historical examples that outline the influence and interconnection of art and technology. Urban interventions in public space are presented, and the role of artistic interventions is described in greater detail, with an emphasis on light interventions as a tool for transforming space. The Lighting Guerrilla festival is presented as an example of a light intervention.
The experimental part presents the author’s artistic expression and the development of the concept through the project A Sketch a Day, as well as various experiments and collages, along with a description of the visual material used. The process of media transformation is then presented, including the digitization of the illustrations and the use of video and audio media. The conclusion presents the implementation of the artwork through projection mapping, highlighting the technical challenges the author faced in realizing her artistic ideas.
The work as a whole explores the interplay of traditional art techniques and contemporary digital technologies from a low-tech perspective, and their role in creating critical and aesthetically rich interventions in public space that contribute to greater accessibility and dialogue between art and the wider community.
