Mobile applications that enable interactive and personalized learning have emerged in recent years as an effective way to promote knowledge acquisition across various fields. Semaphore (Winkler alphabet) is a method of visual signalling that uses flags to convey messages. Memorizing semaphore signals can be a time-consuming and challenging process, as less engaging methods often reduce motivation to learn. In this context, mobile applications can offer an innovative and interactive solution. The Semaphore app was developed to enhance the learning process of memorizing semaphore signals. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed Semaphore mobile application as a learning tool in comparison with traditional learning methods and to assess the quality of its user experience.
The study involved 26 participants, divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group used the Semaphore app, while the control group learned through traditional methods (printed materials). Learning effectiveness was assessed through a pre-test, an immediate post-test, and a delayed post-test after 24 hours. The user experience was evaluated using the standardized User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) and supported by semi-structured interviews with ten users. The statistical significance analysis included t-tests for dependent and independent samples, Mann-Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon test.
Although the results did not show statistically significant differences between the groups, participants using the app achieved higher average scores in all knowledge tests. In addition, qualitative data from interviews revealed that convenience and the app's high motivational value were major advantages over traditional methods. Many participants emphasized that the app’s accessibility encouraged them to learn even during short or unplanned moments when they would not typically use printed materials. The UEQ analysis confirmed high ratings for attractiveness, clarity, and efficiency, while manageability and stimulation indicated areas for future improvement. Overall, the Semaphore app represents a modern, accessible, and user-friendly learning tool that can effectively support the memorization of semaphore signals, especially among beginners, by increasing motivation and promoting everyday learning engagement.
