Abstract

Title:
Project work with a puppet in kindergarten
Abstract:
There are several different ways to use puppets in educational work with children. Among those is project-based learning with a puppet, which has been increasingly recognized as a regular pedagogical practice over the past decade. This is what incouraged me to explore and implement this approach myself. With this thesis I aim to demonstrate how the use of a puppet affects the establishment of relationships with children while using project-based activities in kindergarten. The theoretical part outlines the foundimental concepts upon which I based my thesis. Among those are several interconnected topics. My primary focus was the role of the puppet in the educational process, secondary I conducted a short examination of the exsisting literature regarding project-based learning involving puppets. Special focus was given for examining the role that the educator has in facilitating the planned pedagogical process in the kindergarten. Later on I explored multidisciplinary integration which is often reffered to as cross-curricular integration if we are talking about its presence in early childhood education. Lastly I explored what role the puppet has in fostering relationships with children in a kindergarten. I was mostly interested in finding out how the puppet influences the progression of a project in the kindergarten and how it affects the educator's relationship with the children. The aim of the practical part was to investigate the role of the puppet in establishing relationships with children. I planned and executed a project with a puppet involving custom made dragon puppet. The project was based in Mavrica Kindergarten within the group named "Modri slončki" which consists of children aged 5 to 6 years. The practical part of the thesis portraits a detailed presentation of the project planning process, my personal preparation for guided pedagogical activities and their subsequent evaluation. I also included some of my personal reflections, selected statements from the children and photographs documenting the whole project. The analysis and synthesis of the findings can be found at the end of the thesis. The findings conclude that the puppet itself is a strong enough motivator for children and encourages them to participate in activities. The professional and pedagogical role of the educator is also important throughout, whose task is to plan activities of high quality and to thoughtfully connect them together. Children learn a lot in a proccess like this and cooperation and joint creation improve social relationships and strenghten the bond with the educator. All of the listed positive learners are described in the empirical part which also includes reflections, statements from the children and photographs of the project.
