This master’s thesis explores the role, characteristics, and challenges of nonprofit media in Slovenia, with a particular focus on investigative journalism as a vital pillar of democratic society. The aim of the thesis is to examine how nonprofit media operate, their funding models, organizational structure, and the degree of editorial autonomy they maintain. The empirical part is based on a qualitative analysis of two semi-structured interviews with journalists from Oštro and Pod črto, two of the most prominent nonprofit media outlets in Slovenia. The analysis reveals that both media organizations adhere to high professional and ethical standards and maintain editorial independence despite financial uncertainty. They stand out for their transparency, strong focus on public interest, and innovative approaches to both content production and organizational structure. Shared challenges include the small size of the Slovenian media market, the lack of institutional support, and difficulties in securing sustainable funding sources.
