This diploma thesis focuses on the issue of determining the leakage rate of the insulating gas in
GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) compartments. The leakage rate can be estimated on the basis
of trends in gas density measurements in the compartments. The gas density measurements
were obtained using dedicated IIoT sensors for monitoring the insulating gas, installed as part
of a six-month pilot project. The thesis also summarises the basic characteristics of GIS
switchgear and the insulating gas SF6 in connection with standards, legislation and typification.
