Nazi Germany, the genocide in Rwanda, and the wars in Yugoslavia represent three historical cases in the 20th century where propaganda was used to spread radical ideology and intensify violence. In Germany, the Nazi Party came to power in 1933 and centralized control over the media. Under Nazi rule, the Holocaust was carried out against the Jewish population. In Rwanda, between April and July 1994, the Hutu perpetrated genocide against the Tutsi, and during the dissolution of Yugoslavia, brutal wars broke out across the region. In each case, violence was fueled by deliberately orchestrated propaganda that relied heavily on mass media. In my thesis, I will examine the parallels between these three events, which ultimately culminated in genocide.
