Psychological well-being, which refers to an individual's experience of inner peace, contentment and meaning in life, is a key aspect of mental health, especially during adolescence. A lack of social support can have a negative impact on the mental well-being of adolescents. This research aims to test whether participation in online health communities such as the #Thisisme portal can mitigate these negative effects through empowerment. Data was collected through a random sample of users of the online counselling service #Thisisme in May and June 2024 using the Web-CSAQ method. Structural equation modelling was used to test the proposed theoretical model. 68 female and 9 male and female users of the #Thisisme portal, aged between 11 and 22 years, were included in the analysis. The analysis confirmed a positive influence of social support on psychological well-being and a negative influence on active participation (e.g. asking questions, making comments/responding to peers) in the counselling room. Active participation and the frequency of visits to the online counselling service have a positive effect on empowerment and psychological well-being. This suggests that online counselling plays a crucial role in enhancing adolescents’ well-being through empowerment. The results of the study underline the important role of online counselling for the psychosocial development of adolescents.
