Abstract

Title:Performance analysis of thermoelectric modules used as thermal switches
Abstract:
With the growing emphasis on high energy efficiency of technological devices and systems, optimizing heat transfer is essential. Thermoelectric thermal switches, which allow time-controlled heat transfer, offer a potential solution for improved thermal management. In this master thesis, a simple thermoelectric thermal switch was designed and numerically analysed. The numerical analysis was performed in the web application TCCbuilder. Firstly, we validated the thermoelectric model of TCCbuilder through an experiment, thereby justifying the tool’s usefulness for the analysis and optimization of such devices. For the numerical analysis of the designed switch, we then selected several reasonable temperature ranges. The thermal switch figures of merit, i.e. steady-state switching ratio, response time, and energy efficiency, were calculated. A comparison with electrically actuated thermal switches from the literature demonstrated the competitiveness of the proposed thermal switch.
