Abstract
Wastewater treatment (WWT) is a fundamental process that aims to remove pollutants from wastewater and minimise pollution of the receiving waters. WWT, resource recovery and reuse can beachieved through the use of nature-based solutions (NBS) such as constructed wetlands, waste stabilisation ponds, evapotranspirative willow systems and algae ponds, where plants, microbes and soil interactions are used to reduce pollution in the discharge. Algae ponds, more specifically high-rate algal ponds (HRAP), can be used as secondary (i.e. removal of organic matter) or tertiary treatment (i.e. removal of nutrients) for different types of wastewater can be used for various purposes, e.g. bioenergy, biostimulants and biofertilisers.
