The title of my master’s thesis is Flute Music at the Court of Frederick II: Johann Joachim Quantz and His Treatise On Playing the Flute (Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen, 1752). In my master’s thesis, I first outlined the musical life at the Prussian court and then placed Quantz in this context. He was active at this court in the last part of his life and wrote his treatise there. The content of the treatise is also discussed in this paper. The reader of Quantz’s treatise will not only learn something about flute playing, but will also gain an insight into many aspects of music and performance practice in the first half of the 18th century. In the final part of my master's thesis, Quantz’s ideas are applied to two selected works (a solo sonata for flute and a flute concerto).
