The assignment explores the potential of revitalizing the former Aero factory site along Ipavčeva Street in Celje, aiming to reconnect the degraded industrial area with the broader urban fabric. The project begins by examining the industrial history of Celje and the concept of adaptive reuse in architecture. Based on this research, programmatic and theoretical foundations are developed, along with analyses of the current condition of both the city and the site.
A key part of the project is the revitalization of the remaining factory buildings and the surrounding outdoor spaces, following necessary but minimal demolitions. The goal is to preserve as much of the existing structures as possible, promoting sustainability and maintaining the historical identity of the area.
The proposed program is divided into three segments: socializing, creativity, and production. Since the Aero Ida company still operates on-site, a trace of its productive heritage remains. The creativity segment includes studios, workshops, music rehearsal spaces, and exhibition areas. For social interaction, the design includes a bowling alley, billiards, board game rooms, an indoor concert hall, a café, an outdoor venue, a skate park, and a hostel to support diverse activities and longer stays.
The design emphasizes opening the area to the city, introducing public functions into preserved structures, and forming vibrant new outdoor spaces. The intervention is envisioned as a new leisure and cultural center that integrates the site into the life of Celje. The aim is to highlight the site’s potential and reconnect it with the urban context.
