Antično piratstvo s poudarkom na kilikijskih piratih : diplomsko delo

V diplomskem delu je najprej obravnavan splošen oris obdobja vzpona piratov, opis njihovega središča v Kilikiji in okoliščine ter vzroke za njihov hiter vzpon. Nato se delo osredotoči na dogodke v antičnih virih, pri katerih so bili vključeni pirati – vpletenost v vojne z Mitridatom, Sertorijem in vpliv na suženjski trg. Osrednji del predstavljajo rimske akcije proti piratom, ki si sledijo do Pompejevega pohoda in uspešnega izničenja piratske sile na Sredozemskem morju leta 66 pr. Kr.

• Title: Ancient Mediterranean piracy and the cilician pirates

Abstract

The thesis first provides a general overview of the period of the rise of piracy, describing their center in Cilicia and the circumstances and causes for their rapid ascent. Then it focuses on events recorded in ancient sources that mention the involvement of pirates. These include their involvement in the wars with Mithridates, Sertorius, and their influence on the slave market. The central part of the thesis is dedicated to Roman actions against the pirates, leading up to Pompey's campaign and its successful eradication of the pirate power in the Mediterranean in 66 BC.
