Abstract

Title:What will people say?!: Conceptual design for the renovation of the department store and revitalization of the city centre in Buzet
Abstract:
The master's thesis investigates the phenomenon of consumerism and its impact on the architecture of retail spaces, focusing on department stores as one of the most iconic typologies of the 20th century. Once central hubs of urban life, these buildings today often face spatial and functional obsolescence. The core case study is the department store in Buzet, located in direct contact with the town square. The building represents a key spatial and symbolic element of the urban core, having historically played a vital social and economic role. The thesis explores the potential of revitalizing this degraded structure as a starting point for a broader renewal of the town center. Rather than proposing demolition or complete reconstruction, the project introduces a sustainable strategy based on a series of microinterventions— small but thoughtful spatial modifications that build on the existing qualities of the structure. These interventions aim to restore the social value of the space by encouraging informal encounters, cultural events, and everyday use by local residents. In this context, the department store is no longer seen solely as a commercial facility but as a potential generator of public space and activity. The thesis emphasizes the importance of adaptive reuse, economic feasibility, and architectural responsibility in the era of post-consumerist transformation.

Keywords:consumerism, department store, urban revitalization, sustainable architecture, adaptive reuse, Buzet, public space, micro-interventions.
