We designed and constructed a prototype of a lounge chair with a single laminated support. The prototype was then tested according to the SIST EN 12520:2010 standard Furniture – Strength, durability, and safety – Requirements for domestic seating. We were interested in how much the chair would bend under a specific load and whether it could withstand that load. The prototype passed all the tests, which led us to explore how the lounge chair would perform if made from different materials. The selected input materials were tested using the Bending Test SIST EN 310:1996 Wood-based panels – Determination of modulus of elasticity and bending strength, which allowed us to measure their bending strength and modulus of elasticity. Once we had this data, we used SolidWorks Simulation to simulate the load on the lounge chair made from various materials. We compared the results of the prototype testing with the results from the simulations. This allowed us to determine which material would be most suitable for production. After testing the prototype and conducting simulations with the selected wood materials, we found that the lounge chair can easily withstand the specified load without any risk of failure at critical points.
