Introduction: Lyme borreliosis is the most prevalent tick-borne disease in Slovenia, affecting individuals among all age groups. It predominantly occurs during the spring and autumn seasons, when ticks are most active. Purpose: The aim of this thesis is, through a literature review, to investigate the general population’s awareness of the disease; to assess the knowledge and skills of nurses in health education within healthcare activities—specifically in recognizing tick bitesand monitoring the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Furthermore, the thesis aims to examine the impact of chronic Lyme disease and healthcare professionals’ attitudes on patients’ quality of life. Methods: In the thesis we used a descriptive literature review method, primarily based on foreign language which was searched via remote access by DiKUL in databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. The search was confined to publications from 2015 to 2025. Results: Fourteen articles were included in the detailed review. It was found that awareness of Lyme borreliosis, preventive measures, and recognition of early symptoms is uneven among the population and is significantly shaped by sociodemographic factors such as age, gender, education, occupation, and monthly income. The knowledge and skills of nurses in recognizing and formulating nursing diagnoses for the disease are limited, which can lead to delayed diagnosis and inadequate patient management. Chronic Lyme borreliosis affects individuals on physical, psychological, and social levels, making effective communication from healthcare providers particularly important. Discussion and Conclusion: Implementing targeted health education approaches for raising awareness is essential for reducing the disease burden. Nurses require additional knowledge of a holistic approach to the patient care as well as enhanced communication skills with patients. Future research should also include the patient’s close family members, as Lyme borreliosis often has a profound impact on family dynamics.
