Somalia is facing a multifaceted armed conflict. Understanding its causes, actors, and dynamics is essential for the development of effective strategies aimed at achieving peace and stability. The master's thesis provides a detailed analysis of the armed conflict in Somalia and critically examines the use of the European Peace Facility in supporting Somalia's transformation into a peacetime society. The assistance measures established under the European Peace Facility form part of a broader cooperation between the European Union on the one hand, and the African Union and Somalia on the other hand. Their objective was to support the military component of two now-concluded missions in Somalia led by the African Union, while simultaneously enabling the European Union to strengthen Somalia’s military and defence capacities. To maximise the impact, even closer alignment and coordination between the European Union and all relevant actors operating in Somalia in the military and defence fields is required. International community interventions in Somalia must be adapted to local priorities and reflect the realities on the ground. It is also essential to promote regional cooperation, as the consequences of the armed conflict in Somalia extend beyond its borders.
