In my master’s thesis, I compare short story collections nominated for the novo mesto award in 2021. In the theoretical part, I first define the short story and elaborate on the role and importance of literary awards in Slovenia. I present the novo mesto award and its predecessor, the fabula award. I focus on the novo mesto award in 2021 and introduce the authors of the nominated short story collections. At the end of the theoretical part, I define literature valorisation in literary studies and define literariness from the point of view of different experts in the field. The analytical part of the thesis begins with an analysis and comparison of the nominated short story collections: Too late, later (Prepozno, pozneje) by Marko Golja, Bee Family (Čebelja družina) by Anja Mugerli, Illegal Melancholy (Nezakonita melanholija) by Carlos Pascual and A Knife in the Mouth (Nož v ustih) by Agata Tomažič. In the last chapter, I critically evaluate the decision that the novo mesto award for 2021 was given to Carlos Pascual’s Illegal Melancholy (Nezakonita melanholija).
