The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 shook the world. Reporting on war is not easy for journalists, as they face challenges that test their ethics and professionalism. In my master’s thesis, I aimed to identify the key ethical dilemmas faced by editors and journalists of the most widely read online news media in Slovenia when selecting images of the Russo-Ukrainian war. I was also interested in how (if at all) these media verify the authenticity of visual materials. Through interviews with editors and journalists, I found that they encounter both similar and different ethical dilemmas in their work. The most common ethical dilemmas are related to images depicting individuals in vulnerable situations and graphic scenes, that might be distressing to readers. I also found that they do not verify the authenticity of visual content provided by news and photo agencies or official sources, as they trust them. However, when verifying the authenticity of visual materials on social media, they rely on various online tools. Despite this, verifying authenticity on social media remains a challenge for them.
