This Master's thesis examines the typology, purpose, and functions of linear shrub plantings for creating privacy. The primary objectives are to analyze the seasonal changes and translucency of selected plant species, quantify their privacy-providing capacity, assess their ornamental value throughout the year, and ultimately, identify their strengths and weaknesses for use in designed plantings. Based on these analyses, recommendations are provided for species suitable for linear plantings in two distinct climatic zones in Slovenia. The research demonstrates that different species offer varying levels of privacy, with deciduous species exhibiting the greatest seasonal variability. Deciduous hedges provide maximum privacy in spring with the emergence of new foliage, and minimal privacy in winter when garden activity is typically reduced. Privacy levels are influenced by factors such as plant type, planting density, branch and shoot structure, and maintenance practices. Furthermore, the ornamental potential of each species, including variations in leaf color, flowering, and fruiting, is evaluated across seasons.
