Abstract

Title:Revitalization of the Karst cultural landscape through fire damage restoration measures, Karst wildfire 2022
Abstract:
The Karst region is highly susceptible to wildfires due to its natural characteristics—arid climate, lack of surface water, and strong winds. Rapid overgrowth has transformed the traditional cultural Karst landscape and increased its vulnerability to fires, such as the major wildfire that occurred in the summer of 2022. This master’s thesis treats the burnt area as an opportunity to establish a fire-resilient landscape with a strengthened identity, through the restoration of typical Karst elements and the mosaic placement of characteristic agricultural uses. The analytical part includes spatial and fire analyses as well as a review of post-fire rehabilitation documents. The focus is on the area around Kostanjevica na Krasu. Based on the analyses, two spatial land use proposals were developed, both respecting natural conditions and historical land use patterns, along with a proposal for fuelbreaks. The first proposal addresses the broader fire-affected area—the surroundings of Kostanjevica na Krasu—and presents the distribution of three general land use categories, each accompanied by specific guidelines. This map was created by modeling data in ArcGIS. The second proposal focuses on a more detailed area—Korita na Krasu—and shows a more illustrative arrangement of specific land uses, following the previously defined guidelines. This proposal was created through manual placement of polygons for each use, resulting in a mosaic landscape pattern that opens up the Karst terrain, reduces fuel continuity, lowers wildfire risk, enhances biodiversity, and reinforces the spatial identity of the Karst region.
