This master’s thesis explores the field of sustainable graphic design, specifically on sustainably designed printed materials with an emphasis on the use of eco-friendly typefaces. The objective of the thesis was to develop and design a sustainable sports diary for children practicing judo by incorporating appropriate strategies of sustainable graphic design. Special attention was given to the selection of typography that enables reduced ink consumption without compromising the readability and functionality of the text.
In the experimental part, the method of analysis was applied to examine existing sustainable graphic products and sports diaries available on both the domestic and international markets. This was followed by the development of an original product—a sports diary for young judoka. During the design process, particular care was taken to integrate sustainable typographic solutions, including the use of eco typefaces and typefaces with reduced ink coverage. The content and visual structure were adapted to the specific needs of the target audience—children who practice judo. The design process included the use of Adobe InDesign for layout development and Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Fresco for the creation of additional visual elements and digital illustrations.
The research demonstrated that using typefaces such as Ryman Eco and Century Gothic can result in a significant reduction of ink usage while maintaining adequate legibility and readability. The combination of eco typefaces and sustainable materials contributed to a lower environmental impact of the final product. Furthermore, the final design achieved the intended levels of functionality, usability, and visual appeal for users.
It was concluded that through thoughtful design approaches and typographic choices, it is possible to create a product that combines environmental responsibility, visual effectiveness, and practical value. The thesis contributes to the advancement of sustainable print design and opens avenues for future research into the influence of such products on user behavior and environmental awareness. It also supports the continued development and application of eco typefaces and encourages further investigation in this field.
