Abstract

Title:Reasons for cessation of breastfeeding in first three months : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Breastfeeding is the best and most natural way to feed newborns. It has positive effect on the mother, newborn and environment. Skin – to – skin contact between newborn and mother and the first breastfeeding after birth have a great influence on the initiation, maintenance and duration of breastfeeding, which should be in first hour after birth. Timely and reliable access to information is very important, so we can prevent most of the problems with the correct positions and the correct attachment technique. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to examine present main factors that cause breastfeeding cessation in first three months after birth and to present the most importance role of healthcare workers in establishing and maintaining breastfeeding. Methods: We used a descriptive method of work. We reviewed foreign and Slovenian literature relating to breastfeeding. We used 14 literature units from the PubMed, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar databases. They are displayed in three tables and presented descriptively. Results: All the studies have shown that the most common reasons for breastfeeding cessation are feeling of mother that she has too little milk for her newborn, discomfort when breastfeeding in public, lack of support, industrial marketing of breast milk substitutes, various breast problems and improper latching, which can lead to nipple problems and pain during breastfeeding. Most of the problems that arise in the process of breastfeeding are to blame for the ignorance of mothers and their partners and the lack of confidence of mothers in their abilities to breastfeed. Discussion and conclusion: Despite global recommendations, breastfeeding rates are declining, it is important to empower women, their partners and society about the benefits of breastfeeding. This should do health professionals, because they are present immediately after childbirth and the period after, so it is very important that their knowledge about it is strong so it can be transferred to mothers. It is also important to support mother in her decision to breastfeed, stand by her side and try to help her when problems arise. It is crucial to strengthen mothers’ confidence, because breastfeeding is an act that both – the mother and the newborn – must learn.
