Introduction: Obesity represents an increasing public health concern, as it significantly
raises the risk of numerous chronic diseases and mortality. The World Health Organization
recognizes it as a modern-day epidemic that demands comprehensive responses from
healthcare systems. Its effects are not limited to physical health but also impact the
psychosocial well-being of individuals. When lifestyle modifications are unsuccessful,
surgical treatment becomes an established option, with bariatric procedures proven to
contribute to sustained weight loss and improved health outcomes. Purpose: The aim of this
thesis was to explore the significance of healthcare management following surgical treatment
for obesity and to identify key interventions that support patients in successfully adapting to
postoperative changes. Methods: A descriptive research method was used, based on an
analysis of scientific articles published in the last ten years. The review included both
Slovenian and international sources addressing postoperative support and comprehensive
nursing care of patients after bariatric procedures. Results: An analysis of five empirical
studies showed that healthcare support plays a crucial role in reducing complications and
improving long-term outcomes. The most important factors include structured patient
education, regular follow-up, psychological support, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Discussion and conclusion: Effective healthcare management following bariatric surgery
requires a holistic, individualized approach. Healthcare professionals play a key role in
informing patients, promoting lifestyle changes, and providing support to individuals facing
both physical and emotional challenges.
