Introduction: Football is one of the most popular sports in the world. It is a contact sport, and as a result, various injuries occur. The most common injuries are ankle injuries, knee injuries, abrasions, concussions. It is important to provide adequate first aid for injuries. The knowledge of the trainers is important, as is the presence of medical professionals with the appropriate medical knowledge. Purpose: The purpose of literature review is to present first aid for the most common football injuries. Methods: A descriptive research method was used, reviewing both domestic and foreign, professional and scientific literature. The search was conducted through the remote access of the University of Ljubljana Digital Library (DiKul), the bibliographic detabases MedLine, Cinahl and PubMed, Cobbis, and the Google Scholar search engine. The search for resources ran from October 2024 to May 2025. Sources used were less than 10 years old. Results: We have found that coaches and players themselves play an important role in first aid on football pitches. Through various trainings and knowledge tests, it has been confirmed that more education is needed for coaches as well as players. They also stress the importance of knowledge in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as well as in the use of an automated external defibrillator. Sports event organisers, coaches and players want to increase access to automated external defibrillators inside sports facilities. However, we found that the occurrence of sports injuries can be partly prevented by appropriate implementation of prevention programmes. It is important to carry out weekly exercises and to do them correctly. Discussion and conclusion: Due to variety of injuries and thus the prevention of the consequences for the injured football player, it is important to have medical staff with the appropriate medical expertise at football venues. Despite the renewal of basic first aid knowledge by coaches and players, the regulations within the presence of medical professionals should be changed. This is the only way to ensure greater safety for football players on football pitches.
