Introduction: Psychological support for parents of children in intensive care units is key to improve recovery from critical illness, and parent diaries are one of the most effective tools for coping with the emotional pressure and traumatic experience. Purpose: To explore, through a literature review, the importance of the use and types of parenting diaries and the role of nurses in the use of parenting diaries for parents of children in neonatal and paediatric intensive care units. Methods: In writing the thesis, we used a descriptive method of work with a review of scientific and professional literature. With the help of the University of Ljubljana Digital Library, we accessed the bibliographic databases CINAHL Ultimate, PubMed and Dikul. The literature search was conducted between September and November 2024. Results: Our literature review found that the use of parenting diaries in neonatal and paediatric intensive care units improves parents' mental health, strengthens parents' attachment to their child and improves their relationship with nurses. Parent diaries can be designed in different ways. The effectiveness of the diaries depends on their design and the involvement of the multidisciplinary health team. The primary responsibility for the parenting diaries may lie with the parents or with the nurses. Health professionals, especially nurses, play a key role in the integration of parenting diaries, as they spend the most time with children and families and provide emotional and practical support. Discussion and conclusion: Parenting diaries in neonatal and paediatric intensive care units are a useful tool for parents to help reduce stress, improve mental health and maintain attachment with their child. The diaries allow parents to communicate more effectively with nurses and other health professionals and to monitor their child's progress. Despite the positive effects of the use of parenting diaries, there are barriers, such as lack of time and exhaustion of parents and health professionals, which limit the implementation of diaries in clinical practice. There is currently no research in this area in Slovenia, which points to the need for more development and research on the use of parental diaries.
