Particulate matter pollution from internal combustion engine vehicles is a growing problem in the world, both from a health and an environmental perspective. Vehicles, in particular those that emit above the legal limit, contribute significantly to the problem by emitting levels of particulate matter, a major part of which is black carbon. To this end, we designed and carried out a test to see if it would be possible to detect vehicles with excessive black carbon emissions by means of a pursuit drive, which could be removed from the road and sent for a technical inspection. Emissions were measured both directly on the inspection vehicle, and from ambient air with a pursuit vehicle driving directly behind the inspection vehicle. After analysing the results, it was concluded that the pursuit technique has good potential, but that further research work is needed to ensure good reliability.
