Abstract
Socratic Lectures symposia www.lkbf.si/about have been organised since 2008 with the primary aim of introducing science to students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, as part of the curriculum for the subject of Biophysics and Biomechanics. Since our previous report in 2023, entitled “Science-integrating university teaching at Socratic Lectures symposia” which was presented at the Academia conference held in Vienna, our activities have expanded - both geographically and across interdisciplinary sections. They have become more focused, addressing topics from multiple perspectives. The conferences hosted top scientists from different fields all over the world and students from different universities (from Algeria, Egypt, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Peru, Qatar, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, the United States, Ukraine). The recent symposium held in 2025 was organised as a part of the Z-STEAM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics). It included a networking event featuring a concert of classical and contemporary music, as well as a recital by a renowned musician. The classical music performances were delivered by students of the Academy of Music, while the contemporary programme featured compositions and performances by scientists presenting at the symposium. The focus was on interaction between students and symposium lecturers. As part of the curriculum, students composed reports on the lecture content to be published in the conference proceedings. They also assembled review articles on specific topics. By using modern communication tools, lecturers were able to interact with students in real time to help improve and refine their work. The students also used artificial intelligence to support the development of their reviews. We observed the following challenges related to student involvement: defining the sections (questions) to be addressed in the manuscript, and appropriately assigning students to tasks in order to ensure good results and avoid confusion.
