Territorial Impact Assessment as a tool to assess urban tourism growth

The article presents and evaluates the existing approaches for assessing the impacts of urban tourism on cities. Of them, the participative Territorial Impact Assessment was applied to the city of Ljubljana, one of Central Europe’s fastest growing urban destinations. The initial assessment of impacts in the fields of environment and spatial planning, society, economy and territorial governance was followed up with the evaluation of these impacts in the light of urban tourism growth. Only one-third of impacts primarily attributed to urban tourism are strongly related to economic activity, and other factors influence the remaining. The selected approach proved useful in revealing the broad picture of the impacts of urban tourism in selected cities and could be of potential use to other urban destinations.
