Abstract

Title:
monitoring the dynamics of slope mass movements in Vipava valley using remote sensing methods and in-situ measurements : doctoral dissertation
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis presents study cases of two different landslides in the Vipava Valley: the mudflow Slano blato near Ajdovščina and the Šumljak debris slide. Both of the landslides present active slope mass movements that are threatening the safety of civilians and infrastructure. For the purpose of understanding their behaviour and, if needed, establishing early warning systems, precise monitoring of the landslides' activity and dynamics is of great importance. The landslides were monitored by using remote sensing and in-situ measurements for establishing their dynamics. Due to differences in their characteristics, two different methodologies were defined for the monitoring of the landslides. Slano blato was mapped and observed using satellite radar interferometry (InSAR) and UAV photogrammetry, while Šumljak's dynamics were established based on InSAR and in-situ inclinometer measurements. Their dynamics were further defined by analysing meteorological variables, hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical analyses. Based on the results, it was established that the landslide Slano blato is no longer active as a mudflow, which is the result of partial remediation measures, but it has still active side scarps that trigger in the form of smaller landslides during heavy rainfall. The Šumljak landslide is still active as a rigid slow-moving debris slide and is driven by rainfall and groundwater level fluctuation. In the end of the thesis, an evaluation of the methodology is discussed, focusing on the usability of InSAR for landslide monitoring in the Vipava Valley.
