Introduction: In Slovenia, due to low birth rates and longer life expectancy, the number of older adults is increasing. The challenges of aging can affect the mental health of older individuals and their ability to perform daily activities. One of the important factors influencing their well-being is the living environment. Most older adults wish to remain in their home environment in old age, where they have spent the majority of their lives. Occupational therapy in the home environment contributes to maintaining independence and safety in performing activities, and it also improves their quality of life by involving family members and caregivers in the care of the older person. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to present a case study of occupational therapy treatment for an older person with paraplegia in their home environment. The aim is to determine the effectiveness of the treatment carried out according to the process model of the American Occupational Therapy Association, which is also used in Slovenia. Methods: A qualitative research method was used, specifically a case study. The occupational therapy treatment at home involved a 68-year-old female client. The treatment was carried out in collaboration with and under the mentorship of an occupational therapist working at the Center for Integrated Care in Ljubljana. The treatment plan aimed at achieving the set goals was agreed upon with the client and her husband. The occupational therapy process was conducted in accordance with the Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Occupational Therapists in Slovenia. Results: The evaluation of the client’s functional abilities and needs was carried out through observation, interviews, and the use of standardized assessment tools. Based on the findings, the occupational therapy intervention focused on improving independence in daily activities, adapting the home environment, and training the client and her husband in the use of assistive devices and techniques. The therapeutic process emphasized a client-centered approach, promoting active participation and collaboration throughout the intervention. Discussion and conclusion: The client achieved all the set goals within the expected timeframe. Progress was measured through repeated assessments. The client became more independent and efficient in performing selected occupations. In our case study, occupational therapy based on the process model of the American Occupational Therapy Association proved to be appropriate and effective.
