Abstract

Title:Reviving alpine pasture heritage on Jelovica: Renovation of a shepherd’s lodge with additional units on Ribenska and Grofova mountain pasture
Abstract:
The pastoral alpine grazing grounds of Jelovica once played a significant role in the cultural landscape, but today, due to socio-economic changes, they face challenges in preservation. This thesis addresses the problematics of the decline of mountain pasture farming and the resulting degradation of pastoral heritage, and the overgrowth of previously active grazing grounds. It focuses on Ribenska in Grofova planina which has the potential for sustainable development yet currently lacks a comprehensive renovation strategy. The herdsmen’s lodge, once the central hub of pastoral life, is now programmatically undefined, the accompanying barns remain unused and the herdsman’s living area retains its original modest design without modern adaptations that would enhance its functionality and omc fort. The thesis proposes the renovation of the herdsmen’s lodge by introducing a new program that connects tradition with modern needs. The barns are repurposed into spaces for workshops, processing of local goods and social gatherings. The herdsman’s living area is extended with a double-height volume, improving living conditions and establishing visual connectivity with the landscape. The surrounding area is transformed into a public space through small-scale interventions that respect the nataulr evnironment. To ensure a more sustainable and modern approach to accommodation, communal sleeping areas within the herdsmen’s lodge are removed and new accommodation units are introduced on the south-facing side of the pasture. Inspired by traditional pastoral dwellings and shelters on Jelovica – kožarice, these units are adapted to the terrain and cultural landscape, providing basic comfort with minimal environmental impact. They are elevated above the terrain and supported by point foundations, ensuring minimal disruption to the existing forest ecosystem and reducing the voerall evnironmental footprin. t The entire conceptual design explores the possibilities for the sustainable development of the pasture while preserving its identity and strengthening its connection to the natural and cultural environment.
