Abstract
Metan, ki ga prežvekovalci sproščajo med prebavo, predstavlja pomemben delež toplogrednih plinov, ki vplivajo na podnebne spremembe. Iskanje trajnostnih rešitev za zmanjšanje teh izpustov postaja ključnega pomena za kmetijstvo in okolje. Metan kot stranski produkt nastaja v vampu prežvekovalcev. Prebavni sistem prežvekovalcev vključuje več predželodcev: kapico, vamp, prebiralnik in siriščnik, kjer poteka razgradnja hrane z mikroorganizmi, kot so bakterije, glive in praživali. Metanogeni mikroorganizmi so anaerobne arheje, ki v procesu metanogeneze proizvajajo metan v vampu prežvekovalcev. Prežvekovalci metan izločijo z izrigavanjem preko gobca ali nosnic ter v manjši meri z vetrovi in iztrebki. Uporaba česna kot potencialnega krmnega dodatka, ki lahko vpliva na zmanjševanje emisij metana, se je zelo razširila v zadnjih desetletjih. Aliicin, ki daje česnu njegov značilen vonj, in topne nehlapne organo-žveplove spojine, ki so prisotne v česnu so pomembne protimikrobne snovi. Med drugim zmanjšujejo delež v vampu prežvekovalcev prisotnih praživali, tako zmanjšujejo produkcijo vodika in posledično obseg metanogeneze in emisije metana. Česen izboljša tudi izkoristljivost hranil in lahko prispeva k večji prireji, hkrati pa zmanjšuje okoljske vplive emisij metana.

Title:Garlic as a feed supplement for the mitigation of methane production in the rumen of ruminants
Abstract:
Methane, which ruminants release during digestion, is a significant source of greenhouse gasses that contribute to climate change. Finding sustainable solutions to reduce these emissions is becoming increasingly important for agriculture and the environment. Methane is produced as a byproduct in the rumen. The digestive system of ruminants includes several compartments: the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum, where food is broken down by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. Methanogens are anaerobic archaea that produce methane in the rumen through the process of methanogenesis. Ruminants release methane by belching through their mouth or nostrils, and to a lesser extent through flatulence and feces. The use of garlic as a potential feed additive that could help reduce methane emissions has become widespread in recent decades. Allicin, which gives garlic its characteristic smell, and soluble volatile organosulfur compounds found in garlic are important antimicrobial substances. They reduce the population of protozoa in the rumen, through this lower the hydrogen production which in turn lowers methanogenesis and methane emissions.. Garlic improves nutrient utilization and may contribute to greater efficiency in stocking while reducing the environmental impact of methane emissions.
