Abstract

Title:Bridges between worlds: Conceptual design for a Juvenile detention center in Radeče : magistrska naloga
Abstract:
The master's thesis addresses the pressing issue of the lack of adequate facilities for juvenile detention programs in Slovenia. The existing Juvenile Detention Center in Radeče, which has been operating in the rented premises of Marijin Dvor since 1951, is facing the expiration of its lease agreement and an uncertain future, posing a challenge for the state in providing alternative facilities. The thesis focuses on developing a new architectural design for the Juvenile Detention Center, ensuring a therapeutic, supportive, and safe environment for adolescents with emotional and behavioral difficulties. The theoretical part analyzes the concept of a juvenile detention center through three key programmatic components—school, prison, and student dormitory—and examines examples of best practices from abroad. Based on these findings, the thesis proposes a spatial solution near the existing location, integrating modern pedagogical and therapeutic approaches while providing comprehensive support for adolescents in the process of re-education and rehabilitation. The project not only preserves the identity of the site but also offers a concrete architectural solution to the urgent spatial crisis. It incorporates innovative spatial concepts that promote positive behavioral changes. The aim of the thesis is to create a safe and stimulating environment that facilitates the successful reintegration of adolescents into society while also providing the state with a long-term solution for the implementation of juvenile detention programs.
